This series provides readers the opportunity to learn about the unique insights and experiences of the San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) Board of Directors and their personal connection to the San Antonio River in hopes of inspiring stewardship of area creeks and rivers.

Looking back on your 8 months with the River Authority Board, how has the experience been for you?

These past eight months have been a formative experience for me. I have enjoyed listening to experienced board members and learning from the dedicated staff committed to fulfilling the mission of safe, clean, enjoyable creeks and rivers. I look forward to continuing to contribute insights from my previous service on the Environmental Advisory Committee as I grow in my role as a board member.

What are your goals and top priorities as a board member in 2025?

As a board member in 2025, my primary goal has been focusing on initiatives that may impact the stakeholders of Goliad County. I have also prioritized promoting innovative strategies that preserve the San Antonio River Basin. Additionally, I will continue to provide my perspective as an active visitor to the River Authority’s Branch River Park and other nature resources to direct my decision-making for the future.

What San Antonio River discovery would you like to highlight in Goliad County?

The San Antonio River in Goliad County is a notable natural resource that enhances the kayaking experience. There are plenty of scenic landscapes, rich vegetation, and diverse wildlife that provide a calming backdrop for paddlers. The gentle currents allow individuals of all skill levels to explore tranquil coves and connect with nature, making it an ideal setting for relaxation and appreciation.

What river or River Authority historical fact would you like to share with blog readers?

My family owns a beautiful riverfront property where magnificent old Pecan and Burr Oak trees thrive. Their sturdy trunks stand as a testament to their longevity. Near the river, remnants of iron pilings from former rope-drawn ferry bridges remind us of our community’s rich history. Paddling along the river, it’s easy to imagine the lively sounds of the past.

John Yochem Jr., a Goliad native, has long had an interest in the San Antonio River and the San Antonio River Authority. He has previously served on the River Authority’s Environmental Advisory Committee, which assists the agency with the Clean Rivers Program and other environmental initiatives. In addition to enjoying living near the River Authority’s Branch River Park in Goliad, he has enjoyed hiking along the river near Riverdale, admiring the old-growth Burr Oak and Pecan trees. John was appointed by Governor Abbott to fill the Goliad Director position recently vacated by the retirement of former director Alicia Lott Cowley. The term is set to expire on December 31, 2027, or until a successor is duly elected and qualified.

Mission Reach Area Maintenance

*MARCH 2026 UPDATE*

Ongoing stem-density maintenance is currently taking place in this area. Crews will be working Monday through Friday during daytime hours. We appreciate your patience as we complete this important work to maintain and enhance the park for everyone to enjoy.

When: Beginning October 20, 2025 through Spring 2026
What: Crews will be performing stem-density removal and related vegetation maintenance along sections of the Mission Reach to help manage flood risk and protect surrounding infrastructure. Some trails or segments may be closed temporarily while work is underway.
Why: Removing excess stems that naturally establish along the river helps maintain stormwater conveyance, reduces flood risk, and protects public infrastructure while allowing grassland and native vegetation to recover and thrive.
What to expect:

  • Limited trail closures and intermittent work zones.
  • Crews and equipment working near the riverbanks during daytime hours.
  • Parking areas remain open, but visitors may see signage and temporary barriers.

Questions? Call the San Antonio River Authority at (210) 227-1373 or visit https://www.sariverauthority.org/services/river-health/ecosystems/.

Thank you for your patience while we keep the Mission Reach safe, clean, and enjoyable.

  • Once work at this location is complete and the trail reopens, construction will shift to the second closure area between the upper and lower trails on the opposite side of the green space.

Please follow posted signage and plan alternate routes. We appreciate your patience as this work is completed.
