The San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) staff is committed to safe, clean, enjoyable creeks and rivers but we need YOU to help us protect and preserve area natural resources for future generations. One action you can take is to join the River Authority and the San Antonio River Foundation by becoming a River Warrior. This program aims to build a volunteer community that supports and strives toward healthy waterways for the benefit of the flora, fauna, and people on the San Antonio River Basin. There are many other ways you can get involved and Be River Proud! We want to highlight your positive actions, so please share with us pictures or videos of you and your loved ones on social media using #BeRiverProud. Once a month, we’ll feature your stories on our blog.
As part of our community outreach and engagement efforts, the River Authority also works with external organizations to coordinate trash cleanups and ecosystem restoration projects that support the ongoing maintenance efforts of our Watershed & Parks Operations Department. This month, we highlight the efforts of two groups in the San Antonio community that have given many hours to help protect and preserve the San Antonio River, one trash bag at a time.
Volunteer Group Efforts
The Balcones Invaders are a group of volunteers who have been around for seven years. They identify and eradicate invasive plants in parks and preserves in the San Antonio region. Part of the group’s efforts also include trash clean up meetings just like the one they had in early June.
Because of the rainstorms, trash had built up at Piedras Creek and they went right to work despite the muddy conditions. As a result of their activities, they discovered a nest of eggs in the area where they cleaned up trash! We applaud the Balcones Invaders for leaving no trace and a thriving habitat for future wildlife to take residence in.
RiverAid San Antonio is a coalition of San Antonio’s citizens and businesses working to clean our waterways and promote environmental stewardship.
RiverAid SA frequently partners with the River Authority for trash clean up events especially after rainstorms. During their most recent event, Down By The River, their volunteer group collected 1,138 pounds of trash!
