General

The San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) staff is committed to safe, clean, enjoyable creeks and rivers but we need YOU to help us protect and preserve area natural resources for future generations. There are many ways you can get involved and Be River Proud! We want to highlight your positive actions, so please share with us pictures or videos of you and your loved ones on social media using #BeRiverProud. Once a month, we’ll feature your stories on our blog.

This month we’re highlighting two school clubs that are learning what it means to be river proud. Read along to learn more about their efforts!

Trash Cleanup Efforts

Rhodes Elementary students participate in campus cleanup as part of Project Acorn

At Northside Independent School District (NISD) Rhodes Elementary, Mr. Sandrin’s Project Acorn club collected over 75 pounds of trash around their campus. As a partner with Project ACORN, we are proud to see these students learning about the local climate and nature while doing their part to keep the San Antonio River Basin clean and healthy.

River Authority Service-Learning Programs

Locke Hill Garden Club participates in a River Authority Service Learning Program

The River Authority’s Education & Engagement team launched two pilot service-learning programs for teachers and students to receive hands on training in nature this year. These programs are Campus Cleanups that educate students about the harmful impacts of litter on the environment and Campus BioBlitz where students learn about the importance of documenting biodiversity by recording observations of wildlife on their school grounds. The Locke Hill Garden Club at NISD’s Locke Hill Elementary School has participated in Campus Cleanup and have been educated and empowered to create change by taking action that will benefit area creeks and rivers.

As our team gears up for full implementation of these programs for the 2021-2022 school year, stay tuned for updates on our social media platforms to sign up for these opportunities for your classroom!
