Karnes County, TX – The San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) in partnership with Karnes County and the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office, are hosting a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, September 19, from 8 a.m. until noon, at the Youth County Show Barn, 1480 CR 345. Karnes County residents are encouraged to show their river pride by disposing of their unwanted household hazardous waste, tires, electronics, and unused pharmaceuticals. Amid the COVID – 19 pandemic, extra health and safety precautions will be taken. Participants are requested to remain in their vehicles and when speaking with event staff to wear a mask.

“Through the successful relationship between Karnes County and the River Authority we are able to provide residents in our community with a safe and secure venue for disposing of household hazardous waste,” said Karnes County Judge Wade J. Hedtke. “Through events like this we can maintain a cleaner environment for our residents and protect our rivers and streams. With the extra safety precautions, in place we are happy to continue to provide this service during the pandemic”

This collection event is solely for household hazardous waste, tires, and pharmaceuticals. Accepted items include paint, motor oil, oil filters, cleaning products, tires without the rim, small electronic appliances, computer components, televisions, and unwanted pharmaceuticals. The Karnes County Sheriff’s office collects and stores all pharmaceuticals until a certified medical waste vendor picks them up for proper disposal. Materials will be collected on a first-come, first-served basis.

“By working together with Karnes County on the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, the River Authority can provide a service to the community while promoting the importance of protecting the river,” said River Authority Karnes County Board Member H.B. Ruckman III “We are pleased at the success we have had on these events and the partnership we have formed with Karnes County. Even through the pandemic, together we are working to protect the San Antonio River Watershed.”

Items such as large appliances, tires on the rim, construction debris, and scrap metal cannot be accepted. For a full list of items that will or will not be accepted, contact Meera Keshav, River Authority Government Affairs Coordinator, at 1-866-345-7272, ext. 3228, or visit the events page of the River Authority’s website at sariverauthority.org.
