San Antonio River in Wilson County

This series provides readers the opportunity to learn about the unique insights and experiences of the San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) Board of Directors and their personal connection to the San Antonio River in hopes of inspiring stewardship of area creeks and rivers.

What have been your goals and top priorities as a River Authority board member in 2025?

As a River Authority board member in 2025, my key priorities include providing constructive input to guide the General Manager’s responsibilities and advancing the agency’s strategic goals. A significant part of my role involves touring recently acquired land and laboratory facilities to evaluate their benefits and opportunities for the organization. Additionally, I advocate for increased investment in public parks and flood prevention measures to enhance community well-being and resilience, ultimately improving the quality of life for our residents.

Are there any insights you would like to share in your experience as a board member?

Since the start of my tenure on the Board, I have consistently been impressed by the positive reputation that the River Authority has created throughout the four counties, Bexar, Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad. The depth of expertise within the team offers invaluable technical insights that significantly bolster its partnerships in the communities. Furthermore, its strong financial practices foster trust and confidence among stakeholders, enhancing the agency’s overall reputation and reliability in the industry.

Mission Reach Area Maintenance

*FEBRUARY 2026 UPDATE*

Acequia Park Trailhead will be temporarily closed due to ongoing Stem Density work. The closure area includes the section south of Theo Avenue and Probandt Street, extending south to Mission Road. Currently, work is taking place only on the west bank. The east bank portion of the project has been completed. Trails will be reopened Thursday (02/05) through the weekend and will close again early Monday (02/09) morning. Ongoing work will take place from Monday mornings through late Thursday afternoons. We appreciate your patience as we complete this important work to maintain and improve the park area.

When: Beginning October 20, 2025 through Spring 2026
What: Crews will be performing stem-density removal and related vegetation maintenance along sections of the Mission Reach to help manage flood risk and protect surrounding infrastructure. Some trails or segments may be closed temporarily while work is underway.
Why: Removing excess stems that naturally establish along the river helps maintain stormwater conveyance, reduces flood risk, and protects public infrastructure while allowing grassland and native vegetation to recover and thrive.
What to expect:

  • Limited trail closures and intermittent work zones.
  • Crews and equipment working near the riverbanks during daytime hours.
  • Parking areas remain open, but visitors may see signage and temporary barriers.

Questions? Call the San Antonio River Authority at (210) 227-1373 or visit https://www.sariverauthority.org/services/river-health/ecosystems/.

Thank you for your patience while we keep the Mission Reach safe, clean, and enjoyable.
