Public Invited to Register for Free Paddling Obstacle Course on the San Antonio River

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio River Foundation (River Foundation) and the San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) are inviting the community to attend the Annual Mission Reach Flotilla Fiesta which will take place Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mission County Park trailhead located at 841 VFW Blvd. This official Fiesta San Antonio® event provides the public the unique opportunity to paddle the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Walk with free admission and parking. This year, participants will get to take part in an obstacle course to test their skills and enjoy a fun day along the San Antonio River.

“The San Antonio River Foundation is proud to offer this free event to the community as it helps bring awareness to the recreational opportunities that are available along the San Antonio River,” said River Foundation Executive Director Frates Seeligson. “We are extremely grateful to the River Authority as well as our sponsors and volunteers for their support in making this free event a reality and we’re looking forward to another successful event.”

This community-centric event is designed to bring awareness to the Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration and Recreation Project on the San Antonio River. The project contains over 16 miles of trails along the river for pedestrians and bicyclists to enjoy, plus a paddling trail for canoeing and kayaking. Located on San Antonio's Southside, the Mission Reach encourages health, wellness, and environmental stewardship.

“The Mission Reach Flotilla Fiesta is the only event where everyone can have the chance to celebrate Fiesta on the San Antonio River,” said River Authority General Manager Derek Boese. “The Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration and Recreation Project has restored the natural beauty of the San Antonio River and this event allows our entire community to experience this stretch of the river in such a unique and exciting way.”

The public must register to reserve one of the free available spots starting Monday, May 17, 2021. Attendees can register for up to six participants per reservation should they want to include family and friends. Kayaks are provided to the public free of charge by long-time sponsor Mission Kayak. Participants that show up to the event for their reserved time slot will also be entered in a raffle for a chance to win a free kayak excursion for four on the San Antonio River Walk with Mission Kayak. COVID-19 precautions will also take place as participants and attendees will be required to wear masks except when they’re kayaking on the river.  Kayaks will also be sanitized so all participants can have a safe and enjoyable experience.
