Cochineala Nature and Art Series: Bioluminescence

Cochineala Nature and Art Series continues! July 30 at Confluence Park from 7PM-10PM.

Join the River Foundation and San Antonio Parks Foundation at Confluence Park for Cochineala, a new quarterly performance series blending nature and the arts. Inspired by the cochineal, this series utilizes art to explore scientific endeavors, all through the creative lens of local artists and musicians. Each event is inspired by a specific theme in nature and includes an outdoor lecture by a guest scientist, a live musical, dance, or theatrical performance, live screen printing, and craft activities.

The first event on April 24 was all about the colors of nature. Activities included: cochineal painting with Yanawana Herbolarios, a seed exchange by SanArte Healing & Cultura Clinic, and a kite building workshop by the River Foundation's "Make Something" Committee. Whitney Behr of "Science Under the Stars" presented an outdoor lecture, "Plant Identification for Everybody." The night culminated in a lively performance by Indie Orquesta Latino band Volcán.

Mark your calendars for the second Cochineala event on Saturday, July 30,7:00-10:00pm. This event will explore bioluminescence, the production or emission of light by living organisms. Grab a limited-edition glow-in-the-dark screenprint, learn FUNgi facts from a mycologist, join our night hike along the San Antonio River, and make a cloud lamp! Our guest speaker is Bree Jameson, who will be screening her documentary film J.E.D.I. TRAINING. The film is about her journey as the first black woman in Texas to bolt and climb a First Ascent. The night's main performances include a custom puppet show created by artist Sarah Fox and an illuminated performance by URBAN-15. This event is free and open to the public! Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for seating.

This series is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts and other wonderful sponsors.

People gather round an art table to paint items at the Cochineala Art series event.
