The San Antonio River Authority (River Authority) staff is committed to safecleanenjoyable creeks and rivers. Still, we need YOU to help us protect and preserve area natural resources for future generations. There are many ways you can get involved and Be River Proud!

Basura Bash is back in 2022!

Basura Bash - River and Waterway Clean-up

River Authority Watershed & Park Operations (WPO) department collected 198,709 pounds of trash along the San Antonio River in 2021! This equates to nearly 100 tons of trash, or about 17 average-sized adult African elephants! That’s a lot of trash to pick up, and as you can imagine, the work never ends!

One quick way to get involved is by joining the Basura Bash on Saturday, February 19, for the 26th annual one-day all-volunteer event to clean the San Antonio River and its tributaries throughout the City of San Antonio.

In 2020, the Basura Bash event hosted 1,823 volunteers who together collected more than 34 tons of trash. As a community, let's come together and beat those numbers! Register as an individual or a group and choose from more than 20 locations throughout the city. More information is available on the Basura Bash website.

In 2021, the River Authority launched a trash initiative to promote awareness of the litter that ends up in area creeks and river. Since then, community members have taken the Don't Let Litter Trash Your River pledge and used the social media toolkit to spread the word. Others, like our featured guests today, have taken action! Thank you to the group below that has taken the initiative to #BeRiverProud in 2022!

On January 1, Friends of Woodlawn Lake began the New Year with an open invitation to the public and tools for the first cleanup of the year. The group collected litter and a few interesting items, including brooms, a king-sized comforter, and "many bags filled with basura." A friend of Woodlawn Lake is a friend of ours, and we thank you for your support!

On January 18, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department and the Alamo Area Federal Executive Board joined together to mulch trees, paint, and pick up litter at Concepcion Park and Roosevelt Park! We know that litter on the land can end up in local creeks and the San Antonio River. The River Authority's strong relationship with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department presents many opportunities to get involved with keeping our public spaces clean. We invite you to fill out this web form and get started with a cleanup!
